Ezio
Music by Christoph Willibald Gluck
Libretto by Pietro Metastasio
Sung in Italian with projected English translations
Roman general Ezio is absolutely loyal to his emperor. But when that emperor threatens to marry Ezio’s beloved Fulvia and her vengeful father plots to rebel, Ezio must choose between his love and his loyalty. Written before Gluck’s operatic reform, Ezio boasts the intricacy, virtuosic arias, and balanced nuance of a classic opera seria. Gluck captures the wild emotions of Rome’s elite in arias so beautifully persuasive, it’s hard not to sympathize with even the most despicable of villains.
